Three Generations of Resilience and Hope: Darryl’s Story

Darryl* story is one of resilience, hope, and dreams. Born in Hong Kong as a third-generation refugee, Darryl’s family's journey began decades ago in Rwanda, where political instability uprooted their lives as early as the 1940s. His grandparents and parents faced unimaginable uncertainty as asylum seekers in an era when refugee protection was scarce. Amid ongoing war and conflict, his parents fled Rwanda for Uganda and eventually found their way to Hong Kong 14 years ago.

Hong Kong has been the only home Darryl has known. Yet, like his parents and grandparents before him, his future remains uncertain as the family awaits news about possible resettlement. Like many asylum seekers and refugees in Hong Kong, they have been waiting for this chance for over a decade.

At just 13 years old, Darryl is already an inspiration. He is one of the bright, determined students supported by SEA Charitable Foundation, which helps provide access to school placement, tuition, and self-development programs. Football has been his passion since he was a child, and he’s determined to become a professional player. For his family, Darryl’s dream represents more than personal ambition—it’s a chance to break free from the cycle of displacement and build a brighter future.

Darryl is happy and settled at his school, and every day he comes home excited to share what he’s learned, especially when it comes to football. Seeing him grow gives us hope for the future.
